CATALOGUE DESCRIPTIONS
These will either be sent to you (by post or e-mail) before they go into the catalogue or once the catalogue is in the public domain. The former is easier because it gives you the opportunity to change the description. If you’re not happy, speak to the auctioneer and talk through your concerns. If, for example, you’re selling an autograph album, say which names you want mentioned. I’ve had stunning Art Deco figures catalogued without the period being noted. This would have lost me a lot of money, as would a low valuation based on the auctioneer’s ignorance of the subject matter if I hadn’t complained. If you are submitting a lot of goods at once, you won’t have the chance to agree to descriptions when you sign the sales agreement and these are the more problematic areas. If in doubt, discuss.
In an ideal world, you can tell the auctioneer what you want included in the catalogue when you submit lots but accept that they will have to fit descriptions to their house style e.g. teapot and cover (instead of lid). This is not possible when submitting several lots at once.
However, when the description is already catalogued and these have been printed and/or e-mailed, you can’t change them. If they are liable to lose you money, you only have one real option to protect your interests – pull the lots.
